True Greatness!

Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.

The corporate management guru has made a gold mine statement! When I read this first time I thought it only related to national and boardroom matters. But as I have kept thinking about it this week, it has struck me this truth holds for every area of my life. It applies to personal, family, church and work life!

We need to strive for greatness! Why? Because we can and we must! All followers of Christ have a Great God living inside us and we worship a Great God. He is the reason,the motivation and the end of our pursuit of greatness. We cannot afford to shrink his greatness to our small ambitions in life which revolves around what Paul David Tripp has called the "kingdom of one".

God's route of greatness starts us off in Eden, passes through Golgotha, checks in at Jerusalem on Pentecost and accelerates by the Holy Spirit to our final destination : the new heavens and new earth! It has greatness written all over it! And when we grasp the magnitude of this extraordinary journey we are on we won't settle for merely "good" in life we will live for much greater, greater ambitions. And God's ambitions are great. They are written in the last book of the Bible : "Behold, I am making all things new".

May we live for this greatness today!

Pornography as Occultism

There is a kind of helplessness that a man engaged in pornography exhibits. He often speaks of it in terms of a “struggle” or an “addiction.” Now both of those terms are accurate, I believe, but they distance a person from his sin in a soul-decaying manner. Pornography is not just an addiction; it is occultism. The man who sits upstairs viewing pornography while his wife chauffeurs the kids to soccer practice is not some unusual “pervert”; he is (like his forefather Adam) seeking the mystery of the universe apart from Christ. Beverly Knight closed the opening ceremony of the Paralympics with what has been dubbed the signature tune of the Paralympics. I had no idea Ms Knight is still in the singing business. And clearly going by the raving reviews she will continue to be around. One media source says her performance was so electric that "there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen as she sang the lyrics to the song and people even watching at home felt the passion in her words" .
